Maya's flat, a grey Monday morning

The mystery payment was a false alarm — a duplicate invoice already refunded. For a day Maya had feared fraud; three late nights gone, and the relief just left her drained.

Worse, the exhaustion had caught up with her. She had come down with a heavy cold she couldn't shake — she'd never cut down on the late nights, and now it showed.

Lena: You sound awful. You gave up the gym months ago, and now you've put on a few pounds. Your body's been keeping score.

On the phone that evening, the launch deadline three days away

By nine that night, fever climbing and the report unfinished, she nearly broke down on the call.

Either way, Lena softened. The deadline could bend; Maya could not.

Lena: You are only human, Maya. Nobody is handing out medals for working yourself into the ground.

Maya closed the laptop — two days off to get over the worst before touching work again.
