Maya's kitchen table, the next evening

The £47.80 warning made the evening-course fee look impossible. Maya laid the bill beside her new budget: paying now meant no takeaways, no taxi home and no spare money until payday. She could keep patching next week, or build skills that might change next year. After comparing courses from a reliable source, she made a decision.

Maya paid the fee from the small amount she had saved for emergencies and promised to cut down on every optional expense that month. She and Lena signed up to take part in an evening English class near the office. Lena squeezed her hand. "We can be beginners together." Maya smiled, although the payment confirmation still made her stomach tighten.

The classroom, 8pm, after a long shift

By eight o'clock, after work and her busy schedule, Maya's eyes were closing. The teacher gave clear instructions, but a new word on the board seemed to float away before Maya could catch it. She felt foolish beside younger students who answered quickly. For a second, she wanted to disappear. Then Lena nudged her notebook toward Maya.

Maya took a breath, kept calm, and carried on. She did not understand every word, but she wrote down the useful ones. When the teacher used a phrase she had never heard, Maya looked it up after class instead of pretending. That small honesty made the next lesson easier.

Sam: A week later, Sam noticed Maya explaining a client note more clearly than usual. "You're making progress," he said. Maya laughed, then believed him enough to gain confidence. At the end of class, the teacher announced a real exam in two weeks. The room went silent.
