Build up to the big moment
blow up — explodeA: Did you hear that loud noise last night?
B: Yeah, something blew up near the train station.
get away — escapeA: How did you get away from that boring meeting?
B: I told them I had another appointment.
Wrap the story up
come to an end — finishA: I can't believe the concert is over already.
B: Yeah, it came to an end so quickly!
main character — most important person in a storyA: Who's the main character in that movie?
B: It's about a young woman who starts her own business.
take time — need timeA: How long does it take to get to the airport from here?
B: It usually takes about forty minutes, depending on traffic.
The kitchen fire
Megan: So I'm just stood there and the pan basically blows up — flames everywhere.
Tom: No way. What did you do?
Megan: Honestly, I just grabbed the kids and got away out the back door.
Tom: Bloody hell. Glad you're alright.
How it all ended
Priya: Did you finish that series in the end?
Dan: Yeah, it came to an end last night. Total letdown.
Priya: Oh no. What happened to the main character?
Dan: Don't even ask. They left it on a stupid cliffhanger.
A real headache
Sophie: How's the new flat? Settled in?
Liam: Bit of a nightmare, to be honest — the heating's packed in.
Sophie: In this weather? Nightmare.
Liam: Tell me about it. Landlord reckons it'll take time to sort.
