The meal & paying B1–B2
Talking about the food, then settling up.
Liking it
strong coffee — highly caffeinatedA: This coffee is really strong!
B: Yeah, I used an extra spoonful today.
bring out — make a quality noticeableA: That color really brings out your eyes.
B: Thanks! I chose it for that reason.
fill up — to make something completely fullA: Do you want me to fill up your water bottle?
B: Yes, please. It's almost empty.
When something's wrong
go off — food spoilsA: Why does this cheese smell weird?
B: I think it’s gone off. Better throw it away.
Paying
pay the bill — settle a bill (e.g., at a restaurant, for utilities, etc.)A: Who's going to pay the bill this time?
B: I'll get it, don't worry.
keep the change — not return coinsA: That'll be $4.50, please.
B: Here's a five. Keep the change.
Enjoying the meal
Jo: Mmm, the chilli really brings out the flavour.
Sam: Lovely. Go easy on that strong coffee, though.
Jo: Ha — true. This starter's already filled me up!
Sam: Save some room, the mains are coming.
When something's wrong
Sam: Does this fish smell a bit odd to you?
Jo: A little, yes — I think it's gone off.
Sam: I'll have a quiet word with the waiter.
Jo: Good idea, better safe than sorry.
Settling up
Sam: Shall we get going? I'll pay the bill tonight.
Jo: You sure? Thank you!
Sam: No worries. Here you go — keep the change.
Jo: Very generous — they earned it.
