Maya's office, late evening, laptop open on a blank report

The client's final condition was one line: a signed guarantee within twenty-four hours. That night Maya began her first formal report — one that would set out exactly what her company promised.

Lena: I read your draft. The opening line — "This report deals with our service guarantee" — sounds properly official. You'd never say that to me over coffee.

Maya laughed — Lena was right. In the next section she had to break down the costs into a tidy table; her new hires now made up a stronger team than the firm had ever had.

The same office, near midnight, report almost finished

Either way, the same words carried a different weight depending on who would read them. Maya fixed a comma and hit send — the report was hers now, and already on its way to the client.
