Maya's office before dawn, after the client alert

At 5:40 a.m., the office printer jammed just as Maya opened the spreadsheet Noah had flagged. The printer was a technical problem; a decimal point shifted in the client's forecast was a breach of trust. The error could set back months of work, and the client's first email suggested the contract talks might break down before markets opened. Maya felt the old urge to hide until somebody else chose the explanation. Noah, authorized to access the source files, pulled up a chair.

Noah: “We do one thing at a time,” Noah said. “You keep calm; I will trace the formula.” Maya hated the instruction because it was right. Losing the account would pose a challenge for the whole team, but panic could set off another chain of mistakes. “And don't draw a conclusion before we know whether the source data or our model is wrong,” Noah added.

The office, then the client call at 8:15

They had been working overtime since the alert. Noah confirmed the details in the raw data while Maya rebuilt the calculations, then a nearby print shop offered a temporary solution for the jammed printer. Maya had sixty pages to get through before the briefing. Every inconsistency went onto a shared log with its source and correction. The process was slower than reassurance, but it gave them evidence.

Maya: By eight, the client still had not replied. “I've been trying to get through since six,” Maya said. Noah looked at the clock. “Then leave a message that does not sound like a cover-up.” Maya recorded it twice, then said: “We found an error, corrected it, and can walk you through every check at nine.” It was the first time she had presented uncertainty without softening it into an excuse.

The client was angry, then quiet. The negotiation nearly broke down when she asked Maya to guarantee that no error would happen again. Maya refused that impossible promise but offered the correction log, named reviews, and response times. The client accepted the pack, then demanded a signed service guarantee within twenty-four hours. Maya ended the call and let her head rest against the desk for three seconds.

“We may still face the consequences,” Maya told Noah. “But at least they will be the consequences of what happened, not what we hid.” Noah opened a blank document. “Then what can we honestly guarantee?” The question was frightening because it left Maya no place to shelter inside a slogan. She pulled her chair closer and began to answer.
