The office lunch table, Monday, 12:30pm
When every light at the station went out, Maya stood still and listened. The last bus display vanished; even the ticket machines died. She used her phone torch, followed the emergency signs and dealt with the fear one step at a time. A security guard finally opened a side door and walked her to a night bus. By Monday, the blackout felt less like a mystery and more like proof that she could manage alone.
Lena: At lunch, the team gave Maya a warm welcome. She had already got along with everyone except Sam. Lena lowered her voice. "Don't take it personally. Sam comes across as strict when he's worried. His busy schedule is ridiculous." Maya nodded, but a hard first impression was still hard to ignore.
After lunch, a new colleague froze during a client call. Sam did not correct her in front of everyone. He sent Maya clear instructions, then quietly backed her up on the call. As Maya got on with Sam, she saw that he looked after people without making a show of it. That changed something.
Walking home through the park, early evening
Maya: Maya waited until Lena was ready. "I don't want to push," she said. "But I take after my mum. I worry when someone I care about goes quiet." Lena's smile was small, but real. "That's why I like you," she said. "You notice without making it about yourself."
Lena admitted she had argued with her sister and needed time before explaining it. Maya did not try to fix it. She just stayed beside her and kept calm. By the park gate, Lena was talking again. Then Maya's phone buzzed from Lena's new number: "Cycle with me before work tomorrow? I could use the company."
