People throw the word 'loyalty' around a lot. What does real loyalty between people actually look like to you?

C2Family & friendsOpinion

A natural way to answer

I think real loyalty is shown in the unglamorous moments, not the celebrations. It's the friend who tells you a hard truth because they'd rather risk the friendship than watch you go astray. Loyalty that only fair-weather friends offer isn't loyalty at all.

Key phrases to use

  • sticks around — to stay with someone, especially through difficult times“Real friends stick around when things go wrong.”
  • no-strings — given freely, without conditions or expectations of something in return“It was no-strings help, pure and simple.”
  • go astray — to start behaving badly or making poor choices“A true friend stops you going astray.”
  • fair-weather — describing a friend who is only loyal when things are going well“He turned out to be a fair-weather friend.”
  • stands their ground — to refuse to give in or back away under pressure“She stands her ground for the people she loves.”
  • lowest ebb — the worst or weakest point in someone's life or situation“She stayed beside me at my lowest ebb.”
  • weathered the storm — to have survived a very difficult period“They weathered the storm together.”
