How much does a book's cover or title affect whether you pick it up?

B2Books & readingOpinion

A natural way to answer

It affects me quite a lot, actually. An attractive cover or an intriguing title is often what makes me stop and take a closer look. I know the design doesn't tell you about the quality, but it's usually what draws me in first.

Key phrases to use

  • catch my eye — attract your attention, especially visually“The bright red cover caught my eye.”
  • judge a book by its cover — form an opinion about something based only on its appearance“Don't judge a book by its cover, the plain ones are often the best.”
