A natural way to answer

It depends where I am. At a market or buying something secondhand, I'll try to negotiate a little. In a normal shop, though, I'd never dream of it — you just pay what's on the tag.

Key phrases to use

  • asking price — the price the seller first wants for something“I paid the full asking price.”
  • talk them down — to persuade a seller to accept a lower price“I managed to talk them down by twenty pounds.”
  • negotiate — to discuss something in order to reach an agreement, here on price“You can usually negotiate at a flea market.”
  • strike a deal — to reach an agreement, especially about a price or arrangement“We struck a deal and shook hands.”
