How do you deal with that uncomfortable twinge of envy when someone gets what you wanted?

C1Feelings & wellbeingReflect

A natural way to answer

I try to use it as information rather than beating myself up. If I feel envious, it usually tells me what I actually want, so instead of resenting the other person, I ask what I can learn. That shift stops the envy from eating away at me.

Key phrases to use

  • fester — if a bad feeling festers, it gets worse because it isn't dealt with“Don't let resentment fester.”
  • eating away at me — gradually causing distress or wearing you down over time“The guilt was eating away at me.”
  • wish them well — to genuinely hope good things happen for someone“Even though I lost out, I wish them well.”
  • poisons — if a feeling poisons you, it spoils your peace of mind or relationships“Jealousy poisons everything it touches.”
  • gnaw at you — to keep worrying or troubling you persistently“The regret kept gnawing at me.”
  • get the better of me — if a feeling gets the better of you, it controls you against your will“I won't let envy get the better of me.”
