Rank your favourite ways to get around when you travel — walking, cycling, train, car, plane — and tell me why.

A natural way to answer

I'd put the train first; it's relaxing and you can actually take in the scenery. Cycling would be next, since it lets you cover more ground while still feeling connected to a place. Driving comes third for the freedom, and flying last — it gets you from A to B but you miss everything in between.

Key phrases to use

  • on foot — by walking rather than using a vehicle“The old town is best explored on foot.”
  • bottom of the pile — in the lowest or least favoured position“Flying comes bottom of the pile for me.”
  • get you from A to B — take you where you need to go, without being special“The bus isn't glamorous but it gets you from A to B.”
  • wander off the map — explore away from planned or well-known routes“The best cafés are where you wander off the map.”
  • suck the soul out of — remove all the joy or character from something“Big chain hotels suck the soul out of a trip.”
