I don’t have a single villainized pick, but if I’m honest, some blockbuster authors just don’t do much for me. I can respect that they hook everyone else, but I usually feel like I’m reading a very efficient formula. The setup is clean, the stakes are obvious, and the pages move fast, yet I’m still waiting for something that surprises me in a deeper way. With a few of the biggest names, I think the conversation around them focuses so much on popularity that people stop asking whether the book actually has much interior life. For me, the emotional payoff matters more than the premise. If I don’t believe the characters have earned the ending, I lose interest pretty quickly. And sometimes the writing itself feels so functional that I can’t forget I’m reading a product. I’m not against popular fiction at all. I just need a little more texture, a little more risk, and a reason to remember the voice after the plot is over.
