How do you go about recommending a film or show to someone whose taste is totally different from yours?

A natural way to answer

The trick is to start from their taste, not yours. I'd find some common ground first, then frame the recommendation around what they already enjoy. That way it doesn't feel like I'm forcing my preferences on them, and they're far more likely to give it a fair shot.

Key phrases to use

  • plant the seed — introduce an idea gently so it can grow in someone's mind later“I just plant the seed and let them decide.”
  • leave it at that — stop saying or doing more about something“I made my point and left it at that.”
  • give it a fair shot — try something properly before deciding whether you like it“All I ask is that you give it a fair shot.”
  • pitch it — present or describe something in a way aimed at a particular person“You have to pitch it to the right audience.”
