Sorting out a falling-out B2
When things go wrong — an argument, a let-down, and trying to patch it up.
Naming the hurt
fall out — have an argument and stop being friendlyA: You seem upset. What happened?
B: I fell out with my brother last night. We had a big argument.
let down — disappoint someoneA: Did you finish the project on time?
B: No, I let my team down. I feel really bad about it.
grow apart — become less closeA: Are you still close with your childhood friend?
B: Not really. We grew apart after high school.
Setting boundaries and making up
cross the line — go too farA: Did you hear what she said to her boss?
B: Yeah, she really crossed the line this time.
avoid conflict — prevent argument or disagreementA: Why didn’t you say anything in the meeting?
B: I just wanted to avoid conflict with the team.
make up — be friends againWe made up, so it's all good. (casual)
We've sorted things out and we're fine now. (polite)
clear the air — talk out tensionLet's just clear the air, yeah? (casual)
I think we should talk things through and clear the air. (polite)
After the argument
Nina: I feel awful that we fell out over something so small.
Kit: Same. I think we both let each other down a bit, honestly.
Nina: Yeah. I said things I didn't mean.
Kit: Let's just talk it through. I don't want to lose this.
Drawing the line
Kit: I do think the joke about my family crossed the line.
Nina: You're right, and I'm sorry — that was out of order.
Kit: It's fine. I'd rather sort it than avoid conflict and let it fester.
Nina: Agreed. Clean slate from here?
Mending things the next day
Nina: I hated how we left things last night — can we clear the air?
Kit: Please, yes. I've felt awful since I walked out.
Nina: Me too. I'd much rather we make up than stay angry over nothing.
Kit: Same. Let's just put it behind us and move on.
