The heating and the lights B1
Fiddling with the thermostat and the curtains so the place is just right.
Adjust the heat or the volume
turn up — increase volume or heatA: It’s freezing in here.
B: I’ll turn up the heating.
turn down — reduce volume or heatA: It's getting really hot in here.
B: I'll turn down the heating.
save energy — use less energyA: Why do you always unplug your phone charger?
B: It helps save energy, even when I’m not using it.
Sort out the light coming in
block out — prevent light or soundA: Why do you wear headphones at work?
B: They help block out all the background noise so I can focus.
brighten up B2 — make brighter or happierA: Sarah seemed upset this morning.
B: I brought her some coffee to try and brighten up her day.
close the window — shut a windowA: It's a bit noisy outside.
B: No problem, I'll close the window.
A bit chilly
Mum: It's freezing in here, love. Can you turn up the heating?
Tom: Hang on, the bill was massive last month. Stick a jumper on and we'll save energy.
Mum: I've got two on already! Just turn it up for an hour.
Tom: Fair enough. I'll close the window while I'm at it, there's a draught coming in.
Too much sun
Sara: The sun's right in my eyes. Draw the curtains and block out the light, would you?
Dan: Bit gloomy with them shut, mind. Some new curtains might brighten up the room a bit.
Sara: True. And can you turn down the telly? It's blaring.
Dan: Nice one, didn't realise it was that loud.
