catch fire — start burningA: What happened to the kitchen?

Something's smoking

A: Quick, the tea towel's nearly caught fire on the hob!

B: Bin it, bin it! Right, has it burnt the worktop?

A: Just a scorch mark, thank god. Could've been a lot worse.

The dodgy plug socket

A: That socket's been sparking — I reckon it could catch fire.

B: Don't touch it. The wall behind it's gone all black already.

A: The sparky says he'll have to cut out the burnt bit of wire.

B: Best get him round sharpish, then.
